by SmarpanGamt » Sun Sep 26, 2010 6:20 am
After Junko lay down, having finished a hard day's work, sleep descended on her like a soft blanket.

A) having finished a hard day's work, sleep descended on her

B) having finished a hard day's work, she felt sleep descend on her

C) sleep descended on her having finished a hard day's work

D) having finished a hard day's work, sleep had descended on her

E) having completed a hard day's work, sleep descended on her.

Please explain the participle phrase is modifying " Junko" or " sleep "

OA later , please explain the choices. Thank you

IMO "B".
EXCEPT B EVERYCHOICE HAS MODIFIER PROBLEM.
"having finished a hard day's work" MODIFIES SLEEP -WHICH IS WRONG.
"having finished a hard day's work"-IT HAS TO MODIFY...... JUNKO

The participle phrase appears outside the adverbial phrase "After Junko..." separated by a comma. This is as clear as English can get to saying "these things do not go together", so the participial phrase then is modifying sleep in every answer choice but B.

I think according to respected instructor
in all options other than B
After Junko lay down, ------------------, sleep
but correct one is
After Junko lay down, -------, she

as it is not sleep that laid down....

There seems to be 4-1 split...what is source of this question
