Advice needed Stacy: Where do I stand?

by rooney15 » Tue Oct 28, 2008 6:19 pm
Hi Guys,

I am a little new to posting on BeatTheGmat so please forgive my ignorance. I didn't know if I was supposed to post in a forum or to start a new topic. Hence I am taking the easy way out. :)

I needed some help from Stacy with regards to my present standing. Let me start by introducing myself. I am a Mechanical Engineer from Univ of Bombay, India with a GPA of 2.8 (??). I presently have 2+ years of work experience and I have been working in San Francisco for the past 3 months. My work has varied between Programming (6 months), Marketing (1.5 years) and Business Operations (3 months). I plan to apply for Fall 2010 which means I will be having 4 years of experience with 2+ years of international experience when I start my college. My GMAT score is 720 with 90 percentile in both Quant(49) and Verbal(40). I have considerable extra-curricular activities that go along well with my regular work.

I plan to be in Sales and Marketing though I AM toying around with the idea of entering Advertising and/or Brand Management because I feel I will do very well for myself in that field.

My year of applying is flexible as is my choice of MBA. I am open to both, Part-time as well as Full-Time. I just want to take the right decision and make sure that my MBA helps me intellectually and not just professionally. My only condition to myself is that I want to do my MBA from the USA.

The questions that I wanted to ask are:
1. I want to pursue my MBA from a top-15 b-school (I am being realistic here!). Where do I stand as of now? What are my chances? Any tips?

2. What are good couple of b-schools that offer top Advertising/Brand Management Courses in the USA?

3. Is there a chance for me to break into the top-10 at all? Since I stay in the Bay-Area, UC-Berkeley is my Mecca. But the reports I've heard from the other advisers have left me pretty demotivated.

Please do let me know if you have any other thoughts or tips that I might find useful. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Kindest Regards

Dear rooney15,

First, you need to decide if you want full-time or part-time as there are differences between the two. If you want to make a career change, as it seems you do, then a full-time option is the better choice (especially as you will be an international student). With regards to top 15 programs, these are the most competitive for admission and as an international student the competition is more fierce. The competition amongst the top 15 is pretty much the same, so it is always good to apply to one or two schools outside the top 25 as reasonable/safety options.

While you have a good GMAT, your GPA is low for these schools. I think you have interesting work experience, but you did not note if you had any promotions. Career progression is also imperative to have a chance at a top 15. As for schools you should look at for brand management, I would suggest doing a little research on mba.com or vault.com. Likewise, look at the placement statistics for schools and see if they have a large percentage (>10%) going into that function.

Lastly, admission is based on more than a GPA and GMAT, so you will need to present a compelling case and distinguish yourself from the applicant pool.

Good luck,
Lisa
