Need help

by sgadipat » Tue Jan 10, 2012 2:32 am
Hi,

I am actually attempting my GMAT in March. I am confident of a good score but I have some concerns regarding the other stuff that I need for a successful application into a B-School in UK.

I am attempting for one of the below schools.

London Business School
University of Cambridge: Judge
University of Oxford: Saïd
Manchester Business School
City University: Cass
Cranfield School of Management
Imperial College Business School

I have 7 yrs of IT experience - worked in India, US and UK.I guess there are a lot of applicants like me from India. What other aspects do you think I need for a successful application. I am a little nervous hearing about the interview requirements.
Any information can greatly help me.

I am trying to maximize my GMAT score so that it helps a little. I have 8 months before I start my applications, so may be I can do something to prove my credentials.

Regards
Sri

Sky's the limit, really. There's never too much you can do!

Taking evening classes in something you've never done before, beefing up your quant skills (maybe by teaching a high school class?), community/volunteer work at a local soup kitchen, running a regularly-updated blog, taking your grandmother on a trip to Europe, trekking to Nepal, touring with your rock band - there really is no end! The trick is in the spin. As long as you can spin and portray your experiences as something that has shaped who you are, has taught you leadership skills and shows you as someone who is not afraid of taking initiative (especially the kind that takes you out of your comfort zone), you'll do well.

8 months is good time, but you'll be surprised how fast it goes once you start getting involved. Sooner you get started the better. Good luck!

Good , you have started thinking of your application ahead of time. Eight months is pretty reasonable amount of time to work on your application. Here are answers toy your questions.

Q.1 :I have 7 yrs of IT experience - worked in India, US and UK.I guess there are a lot of applicants like me from India.

Ans. Seven years of IT experience in three countries is a pretty good experience. It's true that there are lot of Indian applicants like you, but it's also true that no two IT candidates from India would have the same profile. Even though all IT applicants may be similar in their analytical skills, they greatly vary from one another in other areas like initiative , leadership and team -working skills etc. Out of the many applicants that I have worked with, I have not found a single applicant whose skill-set is exactly identical with that of his/her peers. Thus ,even though there are thousands of IT applicants with almost the same GPA, GMAT score, and work experience, but what distinguishes them from one another is their ability to think and their way of dealing with a particular situation in their professional and personal life.

Q.2: What other aspects do you think I need for a successful application?

Ans. As you are aware, a good application package consists of many factors: GMAT score (you are hoping to get a good score), GPA, work experience, application essays, resume and recommendation letters. Begin working on these areas to strengthen your application. As for now, focus on your GMAT , get a good score (700+), and then begin working on the rest of your application package : resume, essays, recommendation letters. For essays, think of your personal and professional attributes that make you unique and then look for experiences that illustrate them. For recommendation letters ,work with your recommenders and make sure they highlight the same qualities that you have illustrated in your essays . You have seven years of IT work experience which is good. Begin short listing your accomplishments (the projects you have led, the initiatives you have taken, the challenges you have dealt with etc.) during these seven years.

Q.3: I am a little nervous hearing about the interview requirements.

Ans. Please stop worrying about the interview ( the last stage ) at a time when you should be preparing for the first stages. Begin preparing for the interview after submitting your application. In the interview, you will be asked in person most of what you have already stated in your application. Therefore, you should thoroughly review all parts of your application package: your essays , online application , recommendation letters, and resume. This will enable you to answer any questions regarding topics discussed in essays i.e. career goals, why the particular B-School (e.g LBS), contribution to the School , and also the information provided in your resume (e.g. 'walk me through resume', 'why did you leave this company?'etc.) Also, you will need to prepare behavioral questions (questions about dealing with tough situations) and the question you may be having for the interviewer.

I hope this helped.

Good luck with your preparation,

Poonam
