bottles of juice

by sanju09 » Wed Mar 04, 2009 4:28 am
A convenience store sells small bottles of juice for $2 each and large bottles of juice for $3 each. Ciara bought 8 bottles of juice at this store and paid $18. Some of the bottles of juice that she bought were large, and the rest were small. How many small bottles of juice did Ciara buy?

(A) Two
(B) Three
(C) Four
(D) Five
(E) Six

Option E is correct.

3x+2(8-x)=18
3x+16-2x=18
x=2

Number of small bottles that Ciara bought=8-x=8-2=6

The correct answer is E,

I nearly choose B at the beginning because I forgot she bought total of 8 bottles

$3(8-s) + $2s=$18
$24 - $3s + $2s=$18
-s = -6
s = 6 small bottles

Sure kamu!

Let l be the number of large bottles of juice Ciara bought, and let s be the number of small bottles of juice she bought. Since Ciara bought a total of 8 bottles of juice, the equation l + s = 8 is true.

The small bottles of juice cost 2 dollars each, and the large bottles of juice cost 3 dollars each. Since Ciara bought l large bottles of juice and s small bottles of juice and paid a total of 18 dollars, the equation 3 l + 2 s = 18 is true.
Since l + s = 8, it is true that l = 8 – s. Substituting this expression for l in 3 l + 2 s = 18 gives 3 (8 – s) + 2 s = 18. Simplifying gives 24 – s = 18, or
s = 6
. Thus, Ciara bought six small bottles of juice, which is choice
(E)
.

It should not take any promising aspirant more than 100 seconds to answer such questions; exlanation takes more time than killing, always. It can be taken as a moderate question on real GMAT CAT.
