I've run across this question before; the equation is incorrect. It should be:
[2^(x+y)^2]/[2^(x-y)^2]
Try solving it this way, and reply again if you're still stuck.

Agree, the question should be as you suggested and it is easily solvable.. Ans is 16...
Wondering, how come GMAT prep s/w has incorrect questions. Its not really reliable then. Hope the real exam is not like this..

Basically the problem is with java version installed on the system. If the latest Java version is installed on the computer, the question is properly formatted.
