We need to express one action in past perfect.

It is almost always helpful to draw a time line in order to decide which event happened 1st.
p-perfect___________________________ Past
|-------------------------------------------------|
resisted revolution____________________ Finally led revolution


Only Option B and D use a combination of past and past perfect. However, D changes the meaning by saying Lawrence of Arabia was earlier known as T. E. Lawrence.
