Better to go FT than PT?

Free advice from the world's top MBA consultants

I am still not sure if I want to do FT or PT MBA and have read quite a few articles but just curious what people here think...
FT:
Pros:
access to all career resources
more access to professors, classes, students
companies regard FT highest

Cons:
huge debt, "no job" to support(maybe a delivery boy?)

PT:
Pros:
Job could help pay for school, income, more flexibility, could possibly find job right after

Cons:
Not regarded as high as FT, potentially limited career change(assuming company's paying for it),

The only thing I am worried about is the huge debt and not being able to provide for myself for 2 years or so. Can I get some stories from FT/PTmers here and how they feel about it?
Thanks!

Hi Shaselai,

You have asked a great question. Both full time and part time programs have a lot to offer. What it comes down to is why you are seeking an MBA. What are your short and long term goals? Can you share them with me? I might be able to guide you a bit better with that information.

Thanks,

Stacey

Thanks stacey,

Well right now I am in the IT field and my short term go right now is "go with the flow" in terms of climbing the latter. My long term goal is moving toward finance position with some IT involved (hedge funds etc.). I think most people going for MBA wants the "big bucks" and I am with that group as well and I know in the IT field a pure technical person can climb so far before hitting the cap and would need to become a manager type to continue to climb - i certainly don't want to be a code monkey forever!

My original goal is to get into a good school, relocate, find a full time job and do MBA part time. If I were to do FT MBA I will basically be taking lots of loans and hope I can find a job right after to pay them off.

Although recruiters might deem FT MBA more "valuable" than PT MBA but isn't the diploma just "MBA" without the FT/PT there? I dont think there is that much difference just because someone took MBA PT and finished slower than someone doing MBA FT?

Thanks!

Hi,

From your response it sounds like you are willing to stay in your current organization, and that you are hopeful an MBA would help in your quest for additional responsibility and growth. If this is indeed the case, I encourage you consider part time programs such as evening and weekend programs. I also suggest that you speak with your employer (or HR office) to see if they are supportive of this and if they offer any sort of tuition assistance.

Part time programs are great for people who want to expand their knowledge base and grow in their current organization. You won't have the income loss that results from enrolling in a full time program, but you will have access to the same courses and professors.

Best,

Stacey

is my career limited if I do PT? I would like to get into a financial institution and am not sure if the FT will look better? Also, for PT/FT I would have to relocate and find a new job so it will be a switch as well.
