AWA ESSAYS: Analyze Argument
ESSAY QUESTION:
The following appeared in the editorial section of a local newspaper:
"The inflow of immigrant workers into our community has put a downward pressure on wages. In fact, the average compensation of unskilled labor in our city has declined by nearly 10% over the past 5 years. Therefore, to protect our local economy, it is essential to impose a moratorium on further immigration."
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. Point out flaws in the argument's logic and analyze the argument's underlying assumptions. In addition, evaluate how supporting evidence is used and what evidence might counter the argument's conclusion. You may also discuss what additional evidence could be used to strengthen the argument or what changes would make the argument more logically sound.
YOUR RESPONSE:
The argument claims that the immigration of cheap labor from different countries has had an impact on the overall wages of the country. The argument further presents an example of the decline of the wages of unskilled labor and so it concludes that it is imporant to curb the immigration in the country. The reasoning of the author is seriously flawed and fails to consider some importants points, which I am going to illustrate in my essay.
Firstly, the author forgets mention the statistics of the skilled labor. The immigrant works does not necessarily mean unskilled labor. He further goes on to assume that such a decline means the decline in overall wages of the country. It might be helpful in order to strengthen the argument, to mention the change in wages of different kinds of labor. Specifically, the argument could mention facts in the field of education, manufacturing, agriculture and so on.
Secondly, the argument does not state the ratio between skilled and unskilled labor. It is possible that the population of unskilled labor jobs is comparatively negligible to even consider the authour's comments. Also, without considering the information on the sample of these statistics and on the total population, these conclusions are seriously flawed.
Furthermore, There are some countries where the aborigines do not engage themselves in certain kind of labor. A recent study in Frace, indicated that there is a huge decline in french population in blue collared jobs. Such jobs are, hence, taken by arab and african immigrants. This examples proves the invalidity of authors assumptions.
Thus, for the aforementioned reasons, the conclusions takes into account assumptions, which are totally flawed and cannot be substantiated. If the author presented facts such as the ratio of skilled and unskilled populations, the population of natives compared to those of immigrants or a sample study of a certain kind of labor. Without such information, the argument cannot be studied further and is open to debate.
