Hello,

I'd appreciate a look at my profile and some comments.

What I'd like to know is
-What are my chances of getting into Harvard or Stanford (if really low, what other schools could I consider?)
-Where do you see weak points I need to improve on and strong points I should emphasize in my application?

Thanks in advance!

Profile:

-German, female, 24 years old
-Speak German, English, French & Spanish
-Undergrad German Diplom from Uni Mannheim, #1 ranked business school in Germany in all rankings
-Grades: weak point. Only slightly above average of those who graduated. Only about 50% actually make it to the end though, rest fail before that. Graduated a semester early and with the toughest specialization (finance). Worked throughout the entire program, paid for my undergrad by myself without any loans or other help (not sure if that counts as an "excuse").

-Work experience during studies:
o Part time job as office assistant during the entire four years.
o Research Assistant at one of the top 3 Spanish business school for three months

-Work experience after studies (2 years at time of application): R&D specialist at a Spanish internet startup. Work includes being community & content manager for our online community. Additionally, I’ll be co-organizer of a Europe-wide round table with major corporations (all names that every admissions person will have heard) and publishing several papers.

-GMAT: Haven’t taken it yet. GMAT Prep Test before I started studying was 710, so I’m aiming for 750.

-Extracurriculars:
o During studies: Ambassador for exchange students, plus some sports
o During studies: Volunteer positions (three months almost full time each) at the last FIFA (soccer) Confederations Cup and FIFA World Cup. First as accreditation volunteer, second promoted to Venue Management Assistant
o Currently: Volunteer moderator at several online groups, including a career group for women with 14,000 members and an alumni group with 1,000 members
o Currently:Involved in small roles in the creation of another internet startup, and a family business breeding, training and trading show jumping horses.

Hi F,
Thanks for your post. Overall, I think you have an interesting background, however I dont know enough about your work experience to truly gauge how competitive you would be for a top 2 program. As a non-traditional candidate, it will be very important for you to demonstrate (1) leadership or managerial experience in your current position and (2) clear short and long term career goals and an understand of how H/S will help you achieve them.

Given the extreme competitiveness expected in MBA admissions next year, you should strongly consider broadening your school search. Would be happy to help you think through your MBA interests.

Regards,

N
