Since conscious patients often died of shock on the operating table, the invention of anesthesia was essential to the development of surgery as the invention of the propeller was to powered flight.
(A) the invention of anesthesia was essential to the development of surgery as the invention of the propeller was to powered flight
(B) inventing anesthesia was as essential for the development of surgery as the invention of the propeller was for powered flight
(C) the invention of anesthesia was as essential in the development of surgery much as the invention of the propeller had been for powered flight
(D) the invention of anesthesia was as essential to the development of surgery as the invention of the propeller was to powered flight
(E) the invention of anesthesia was essential to the development of surgery, so was the invention of the propeller essential to powered flight

Whats your take? :)

D.

the only one that maintains parallelism.
X was as essential to Y as A was (essential) to B.

we are missing "as" before the first "essential" in A. we need this "as" for proper comparison

@scoobydooby: The way I am looking at it is that the comparision is between two clauses and for that why do we require "as"?

Please point out the mistake in my thought

notice, we are comparing quality here. the quality of being essential is brought out by "was essential". to compare adjectives/quality, the form as X as is used.

no action is compared. so the form clause1 as clause2 is not right. so D is preferred to A
