In a certain furniture store, each week Nancy earns a salary of $240 plus 5% of total sales that exceeds $800 for the week. If Nancy earned a total of $450 one week, what were her total sales that week?

1) 2200
2) 3450
3) 4200
4) 4250
5) 5000

I was getting an answer 4200 but that is incorrect. Can someone please shed some light on this question? Many Thanks.

Well, she must have earned 450 - 240 = 210 from that 5% of sales that exceed 800. Since 210 is 5% of x, you need to find x. 210 is 20 times smaller than x (since 100/5 = 20), so the total sales over 800 is 4200. That means that total sales were 4200 + 800 = 5000.
You obviously forgot about that "over 800" rule and that's why you weren't getting the correct answer.
