According to a recent study of sexual behavior in the U.S., over half of the couples that were married and engaged at the time of the study's survey were living together before making a final commitment to each other.

a. couples that were married and engaged at the time of the study's survey were living
b. couples that were engaged or married at the time of the study's survey had lived
c. couples who were engaged or married at the time when the study's survey occurred were living
d. married and engaged couples at the time of the study's survey had lived
e. married or engaged couples at the time of the study's survey were living

I would go with B on this one. Since the couples lived together before they made a commitment, and the commitment was already made by the time of the survey, the past perfect "had lived together" is correct. That eliminates A, C, and E. D's "married and engaged couples" sounds off; couples are either married OR engaged. They can't be both at once. That leaves B, which is wordier but has a clear meaning and the appropriate verb tense.

Dear Andrea,

Can "that" refer to couples? I thought we should use "who" when referring to the person/people.

Thanks,
Viju
"Native of" is used for a individual while "Native to" is used for a large group

'married or engaged' is the right usage here => B, C, E remains
C - unnecessary 'when' (at the time conveys the same meaning)
B - 'that' usage show the 'necessity of clause 'were married...'=> IMO
E - makes 'married or engaged' adjective modifier
I think both 'had lived' or 'were living' is ok here. If the couples stopped leaving before getting married 'had lived' is ok; but when they got married while living - were living is ok.

Only problem in B - is the usage of 'that' for couples, but other options have grave errors . In the end IMO B

It has to be "B". "Engaged or Married" can't be both:)
and "Had lived together before getting married". Tense..
