Let no of total fem = f
no of total employees = x

Eq :

.5(x-f) + .4f = .42x

Solving
.08x = .f

f/x = 8/10 = 4/5

Is D right answer?

Based on the given information we can set up an equation as follows
0.5x+0.4y=0.42(x+y)
0.5x+0.4y-0.42x-0.42y=0
0.08x-0.02y=0
8x=4y
y=4x

We are asked to find fraction of females..i.e y/x+y

4x/(x+4x)=4x/5x=4/5...

The ans is 4/5...
