Congress is debating a bill requiring certain employers provide workers with unpaid leave so as to care for sick or newborn children.
(A) provide workers with unpaid leave so as to
(B) to provide workers with unpaid leave so as to
(C) provide workers with unpaid leave in order that they
(D) to provide workers with unpaid leave so that they can
(E) provide workers with unpaid leave and
solve this one guys

D

Can someone explain why?the answer has a pronoun which doesnt explicitly refer to a antecedent .... Based on that i was not able to conclude which one is the right option.

Hemanth28, requiring in the Qs needs to or that to finish. So cut down A, C and E. Now in B, so as to is unidiomatic - I believe GMAC does not like to use this. So we r left with D and D is the best option to chose.

hi amitava,

I am ok with the answer, but the problem is i feel that answer is also not proper ..just wanted to make sure that i am not missing something.

I am assuming that the word "they" doesnt have unique antecedent.
So i am assuming that there is no right answer in the given choices.

I don't know why it is appearing to me that the choice D is correct - even it is not having that reference problem as well. The nearest noun to the word "THEY" is workers; so THEY is referring correctly to the workers. Hemant, again this is my understanding! Guys what do u think? Stuart or Ron any comment?

Ambiguous pronouns are a style problem, not a grammar problem.

In a perfect world, there won't be ambiguous pronoun references in SC questions. However, if we have to choose between an ambiguous pronoun and a bigger problem, we should select the choice with the ambiguous pronoun.

Technically, "they" is closer to workers than employers, so it refers back to workers. A better choice wouldn't even have had a hint of ambiguity.
