Even tough vs Although

by logitech » Fri Nov 07, 2008 5:03 pm
27) However much United States voters may agree that there is waste in government and that the government as a whole spends beyond its means, it is difficult to find broad support for a movement toward a minimal state.

(A) However much United States voters may agree that
(B) Despite the agreement among United States voters to the fact
(C) Although United States voters agree
(D) Even though United States voters may agree
(E) There is agreement among United States voters that

Explanation: Note that original sentence is using “may agree” that means there is a possibility and hence no surety. B, D, and E omits this “may” and thereby incorrect. They make agreement certain, unnecessary modification. Now we are left between A, and D. “Even though” is an conjuction. It is used as following “We held our picnic even though it rained”. If we want to start a sentence, then we use “Althoug”such as “Although it rained, we went on with our picnic”.

However in our sentence “Even though” is incorrectly starting a sentence so it is out. Although A does not sound correct but it is alright. Many people will say that “voters” can be counted so we should use “many” and not “much”. But remove the United states and see the difference, “However much voters agree” or “However many voters agree”. Offcourse “However much” is making much more sense, you can say that here it is acting as an idiom.

What do you guys think about this explanation ?

OG 11, SC # 77 is using EVEN TOUGH to introduce the sentence.

Could you please help me with understanding the usage of Even tough vs Although ?

Thanks

@ logitech...
i had same doubt once.... i found tis somewhr online . ..

i thought it mite help...

Although Vs even though

Although - linking word - expresses the idea of contrast.

e.g - Although Amit has a car, he doesn't often drives it.

The clause with although can come at the end.

e.g - Although the cafe was crowded, we found a table. OR We found a table, although the cafe was crowded.

Though - is informal. It means the same as although.

e.g - Though / Although I liked the sweater, I decided not to buy it.

We can use though at the end of a sentence.

e.g - I liked the sweater. I decided not to buy it, though.

Even though - is stronger, more emphatic than although.

e.g -

1). Ram looked quite fresh, even though he'd been playing cricket.

2). Even though you dislike Sanya, you should try to be nice to her.

Note - We can use in spite of the fact (that) in the same way as although.

e.g -

I'm no better, although I've taken the pills.

OR

I'm no better in spite of the fact that I've taken pills.

Quick Tip -- Applicable most of the times but not always ...

Even though -- when the condition given is negative but the outcome/result is positive

eg -- Even though Ram hadn't studied, he passed the exam.

Although -- when the condition given is positive but the outcome/result is negative

eg -- Although Ram had studied very hard, he did not score well.

hi logitech

What is the source of your explanation of eventhough v/s although. I think it is pretty ok if a sentence starts with eventhough or although. That should not be the criteria.

Thank you guys. The source was not a company nor a book. It was just some guy's explanation.
