The rising prices of fuel at gas stations throughout the country has created a strong market for hybrid vehicles and has stimulated an increased interest in alternative energy sources.

(A) The rising prices
(B) Rising prices
(C) The rise in the prices
(D) Because the rising price
(E) Because of rising prices

The answer is C

Can someone please explain why? I simply dont understand why B is incorrect.

What's the source? Can you also underline the portions that are supposed to be underlined next time please?

B is incorrect because of the verb "has". We need a singular verb. Only C and D has that. D is incorrect because of the word "because".

B has plural "rising prices" for the singular main verb "has".

IN "b" "rising priceS(rising- adjective, prices-noun)" plural subject, doesnt agree with singular "has created" and thus wrong.

It might help to have some formal learning on this, so you don't have to depend upon your eyes.

Rising in rising prices is used as an Adjective (telling us an attribute of the noun prices). As you would know, Verbs are decided on the basis of nouns, not Adjectives.

Hence, prices determines that the verb should be plural.
