IMO it is B.
The first explanation is not needed for this purposes of this question.
We need to find support for the "alternative explanation". B supports it by refuting the alternative explanation to "alternative explanation" by saying "if u find a group of scientists who did their most creative work beyond 40, then they entered this research field 'later' than the age most scientists enter. Mathematically, if E is the age when a scientist enters the research field and C is age when a scientist does most creative work, then
E + 10 or 15yrs = C
