If x is an integer, does the decimal expression of the fraction x/8 have more than 3 non-zero digits?

(1) x is a digit
(2) x ≠­ 9

[spoiler]Dividing any number by 8 will not result in decimal expression with more than 3 non- zero digits. So shouldn't the OA be D?[/spoiler]

Hi prachi18oct,

Have you considered the possibility that X could be GREATER than 8? Notice that the prompt does NOT state that the digits have to be to the "right" of the decimal point....

Question clearly says decimal expression .

moreover
1/8 =.125
2/8 =.25
3/8 =.375
4/8 =.5
5/8 =.625
7/8 =.875
8/8 = 1

so statement is sufficient as it will never be greater than 3

statement 2 - x not equal to 9 is also sufficient as all integers divided by 8 will lead to less than 3 digit decimals .

answer is D

What happens if the fraction x/8 = 17/8? What would be the decimal expression? And how may digits would the answer have?

I think number of decimal digits in 17/8 is same as 1/8 i.e. 0.125

the question asks for non-zero digits not decimal digits

9/8 = 1.125

four nonzero digits there: the units digit, the tenths digit, the hundredths digit, and the thousandths digit

A) x is a digit

B) x not equal to 9

considering 1 statement alone x can 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. Dividing X by 8 will lead to
0 , .125,.25,.375,.5,.75,.675,1,1.125 which is both less than & greater than 3. so A is not sufficient

considering 2 statement alone x can be any value ,
x=17 then x/8 = 1.125 = 4 digits
x=4 then x/8 = .5 1 digit

so B is not sufficient

Cosidering both statement X can 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 so both statements combined are sufficient.

C is the answer.
