Distance

by GmatKiss » Sat Aug 06, 2011 10:38 am
A train trip begins at Lawrenceville, makes stops first at Milton and then at Overton, and ends at Pottstown. The distance between Lawrenceville and Overton is four times the distance between Overton and Pottstown, and the distance between Lawrenceville and Milton is equal to half the distance between Milton and Overton. The trip from Lawrenceville to Overton is how many times the trip from Milton to Pottstown?

L----------M------------O-----------P
<-----------4x---------> <----x-----> ...........I

<---t-----> <----2t-----> ...........II

so we have taken 2 variables..

we need to find LO/MP

4x/2t+x ............III

from I and II 3t= 4x
t= 4x/3

substituting in III
the ratio comes out to be 12/11

Hope it helps..

Hi,

The 4 stops are

L----->M-------->O---------->P

Let the distance between O and P be X.
Hence,thee distance between L and O is 4X

Let the distance between M and O be Y.
Hence,the distance between L and M is 1/2Y.

1/2Y+Y=4X
3/2Y=4X
Y=8/3X

The Distance between M to P would be Y+X
->(8/3X)+X=11X/3

Hence the ratio between L to O and M to P is

4X:11X/3
12:11

Hence,the distance from Lawrenceville to Overton is 11/12 times the trip from Milton to Pottstown

L------M------O------P

Let OP = x. Therefore, LO = 4x. Also, LM = 4x/3, MO = 8x/3.

LM/MP = LM / (MO + OP) = 4x / (8x/3 + x) = 12/11.

Correction:

12/11 times the distance from M to P.

Again, picking numbers is helpful.

We want a number for LO that is divisible by both 3 and 4 so we pick 12.

LO is 12 miles, so OP is 3 miles. (1/4 of LO).

Meanwhile, LM is 1/2 of MO, but we know the total of LM + MO is 12. Therefore LM = 4 and MO = 8.

Now we have LO = 12 and MP = MO + OP = 8 + 3 = 11 Answer 12/11
