by aspirant2011 » Thu Apr 21, 2011 10:50 pm
Like many self-taught artists, Perle Hessing did not begin to paint until she was well into middle age.

(A) Like
(B) As have
(C) Just as with
(D) Just like
(E) As did
what is the difference between Like and Just Like???? In which scenario are we supposed to use "Like" or "Just Like"????
IMO A...

Can't help u bro regarding the use of "Like" vs "Just Like"....but i pick A because i feel there is no need to use JUST...the sentence is clear with the use of LIKE only, so use of JUST is redundant. Moreover, i'm not 100% sure, but i think "just like" we don't use generally in formal writing so its better to avoid this word.

IMO A because it compares X and Y using Like X, Y.

I think 'just like' is associated with the idiom 'just like that'.

Moreover, I chose A over E because, even if 'just like' may be something sensible, I thought just like should refer to something very specific, such as,

Just like Perle Hessing, many self-taught artists ..

rather than,

Just like many self-taught artists, Perle Hessing ..

Experts please explain.

Pranay

A is correct as explained above by friends. I also think adding JUST in front of LIKE doesn't add any meaning here.
