All terrain

by El Cucu » Tue Dec 30, 2008 5:53 pm
2. All-terrain vehicles have allowed vacationers to reach many previously inaccessible areas, but they have also been blamed for causing hundreds of deaths, injury to thousands, and seriously damaging the nation’s recreational areas.
(A) deaths, injury to thousands, and seriously damaging
(B) deaths and injuring thousands, and serious damage to
(C) deaths, thousands who are injured, as well as seriously damaging
(D) deaths and thousands of injuries, as well as doing serious damage to
(E) deaths, thousands are injured, and they do serious damage to

Guys do you think B is wrong because serious damage is not parallel with causing and injuring?

As you can see this is a // question. Whenever you see a list, make sure that the listed parts are parallel to each other

B) causing hundreds of deaths and injuring thousands, and serious damage to the nation’s recreational areas.

NOT PARALLEL

D) causing hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries, as well as doing serious damage to the nation’s recreational areas.

PARALLEL!

whats wrong with Option A

by Rashmi1804 » Sat Feb 21, 2009 11:34 pm
I agree that D is parallel. But I am not understanding what is wrong with A when D could be correct.

As per my understanding...

A : causing hundreds of deaths, causing injury to thousands and seriously damaging nation's recreation areas.

D: causing hundreds of deaths and causing thousands of injuries as well as doing serious damage to nation's recreation areas.

I interepret it this way....

"causing " chain is broken after first two...in both the cases...new and second verbs " damaging" in option A and " doing" in option D are present

So...is it only an extra conjunction " as well as" present in option D makes the structure correct ? However, the sentence structure and the use of " doing " looks so non-Gmat'ish to me ...

Please throw your comments!!

A.... blamed for causing hundreds of deaths, injury to thousands, and seriously damaging the nation’s recreational areas

hundreds of deaths: noun phrase
injury to thousands: noun phrase
seriously damaging...: adverb + participle!! (not parallel)

D. blamed for causing ( hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries), as well as doing (serious damage) to

In D you have 2 paralellisms. One between hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries (noun/noun). The other between causing...(as well as) doing (verb/verb)
