credit with - usage

by winnerhere » Thu Mar 31, 2011 12:06 am
Hi Guys,

I am confused with the way credit with idiom is used

Carthaginians are still commonly credited as the ones who salted Roman fields during the Punic Wars despite the existence of credible evidence to the contrary.

d. with having salted
e. with the salting of

between d and e the OA is D ..why?

Edison is credited with the invention of buld
Edison is credited with having invented the buld

which is better?

Edison is credited with having invented the buld
Yes I will go with D. credit x with y.... salted is a verb and is required here instead of the salting (noun).

Edison is credited with the invention of buld
Edison is credited with having invented the buld
i feel both can be correct according to the sentence framed.

The issue is tense.

In answer choice D, salting is a gerund: a verb functioning as a noun.

Credited with the salting implies that the two actions (credited and salting) are both happening in the present.

Credited with having salted makes it clear that the fields were salted in the past and that the Carthaginians are being credited in the present.
