Bold Phase CR

by aspirant2011 » Wed May 11, 2011 9:38 am
A product that represents a clear technological advance over competing products can generally command a high price. Because technological advances tend to be quickly surpassed and companies want to make large profits while they still can, many companies charge the maximum possible price for such a product. But large profits on the new product will give competitors a strong incentive to quickly match the new product's capabilities. Consequently, the strategy to maximize overall profit from a new product is to charge less than the greatest possible price.

In the argument above, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

A. The first is a consideration that has been raised to argue that a certain strategy is counterproductive; the second presents that strategy.
B. The first is a consideration raised to support the strategy that the argument recommends; the second presents that strategy.
C. The first is a consideration raised to explain the appeal of a certain strategy; the second presents that strategy.
D. The first is an assumption, rejected by the argument, that has been used to justify a course of action; the second presents that course of action.
E. The first is a consideration that has been used to justify pursuing a goal that the argument rejects; the second presents a course of action that has been adopted in pursuit of that goal.

IMO E is correct.

First bold part is assumption that has been rejected in next statement. The 2nd bold part presents a course of action to achieve goal of maximising profit..

not sure though. IMO E
#1 : gives a reason why a strategy, which is eventually rejected by the argument, is adopted.
#2 : Change in the strategy
Let's look at answer choices
A : wrong Second is not a strategy which is counterproductive
B. argument doesn't recommend #
C. argument is not trying to appeal.
D. #1 is not a assumption
E: goal is to maximize profit.

A different version of the question is #74 of the Official Guide Verbal Review Second Edition. That question has different parts in bold. Since you will want to try that question I will not reveal the answer.

To the question that we have here, I am not sure that there is a correct answer. It seems that too much has been placed in the first bold portion. Do you see that from the word "because" to the word "can" we have a reason to adopt the strategy that begins with "many companies" so at the same time we have the strategy of charging the maximum price as well as the reason for that strategy. Also, this is a strategy that the arguments rejects -- NOT A GOAL that is rejected but a strategy that is rejected.

I do not believe that any of the answer choices correctly describe the first portion. I also do not believe that any answer choice correctly describes the second portion.

So this is a flawed version of the question - in my opinion. It seems that someone has taken on official question and changed the portion that is in bold as well as the answer choices.

Beware, there are many versions of this question out there - nothing that I found online was the correct version. If you want to see the actual version of this question get the Verbal Review 2nd Edition!

It happens all the time that these questions will be based on official questions without actually employing the logic from the original.

I could post the actual (official) question if you would like...
