Advice, please!

by nadie » Thu Nov 28, 2013 1:04 pm
Hello,

I just took the GMAT last weekend, and am not very happy with my score. I had very limited time to study, and I know that this was not the best I could have done and that retaking it would probably be beneficial. However, given the approaching application deadlines, I'm not sure if I have enough time to retake the test with a significant improvement in my score. My main concern is the imbalance of my score; I ran out of time on the quantitative section and that significantly impacted my score for that section. I would appreciate any advice/recommendations I could get regarding if my current stats are good enough to get me into a top program (currently looking at UCLA as a top choice), or if I should seriously consider retaking the test. Please see my profile below. Thank you in advance!

27 yr old/biracial/female
5 years of work experience
GPA: 3.76
Total GMAT Score: 680
Quantitative: 38, Verbal:44, Integrated Reasoning: 6, AWA: 5.5

Hmmm, you don't have the time for a retake if you want to apply this year. But a 680 MAY be enough for UCLA. It depends on the rest of your profile. What do you do? What UG did you graduate from? With what GPA? with a lot more detail, I can try and better answer your question.

Hi Jon, thanks for the reply!
I graduated from The Ohio State University in 2008, with a major in Strategic Communication and a minor in General Business. I graduated from the Honors Program with a 3.76 GPA. My hopes were to get into Marketing, but I've been kind of all over the place since then--real estate, retail, HR (also just one of many reasons why I want to pursue an MBA). I am currently working in Customer Relations/Account Management at the Cintas Corporation here at their headquarters in Cincinnati.
Please let me know if you need any more information to evaluate my profile. Thank you for your feedback!

Hi there,

At this stage, I honestly think you shouldn't retake the GMAT. Your 680 puts you in play within UCLA's range and you have a very strong GPA from a pretty decent university. I say this because you're 27 and if you wait to apply next year, you'll be 28.

That said, you do have a strong GMAT score overall but your quant component does cause me a little concern. Your application and recommendations will really have to highlight your analytic capabilities. From a professional standpoint, I think your bouncing around could be spun to your advantage but you'll have to pay attention to that too. You don't want to come across directionless.

Let me know if you have any questions or want to talk it out!

As a biracial female you come from an underrepresented group so your 680 is not only competitive for UCLA, but also every other top MBA school. Concentrate on your applications.
