NUS MBA - is it worth my time?

Hi there,

I'm currently earning close to 200K SING DOLLAR without doing MBA as an individual contributor in IT firm.
I would like to do a part time MBA @ NUS or Nanyang but am not sure if it would be worthwhile.
Recently I ran into numbers of INSTEAD MBAs and it seems those titles / connections are necessary to move into director / C-level and you need to leverage your networks to continue to maintain job streams.

My background - worked in global Fortune 100 IT companies for 7+ years (Systems Engineer, Consultant)
Fluently speak 3 languages and am currently taking an Asia Pacific Management Role
Academic wise - Poor GPA (B Avg in Arts / C Avg in Bsc in World's Top 30 school)

The reason why I would like to do MBA is to obtain business acumen but it seems to be a heavy investment of time and money if I will not expect to see my salary double or triple.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't think you will see your salary triple, but it might double. :)


It depends of course on where you go. But I think your first thought is right, and those people you met from INSEAD are an example of how things work: You want to move up, then an MBA will help you take that time off, build those connections and move to something new where you will be on more of a management track. That's why MBAs exist!

Judy,

Almost always, I recommend going in for the full time course instead of the part time option. There are multiple reasons ranging from brand, to networking opportunities to the learning you get out of it. Read here for more on this. If you do go for a part time program, the primary return will be in terms of learning - do not have unrealistic expectation on monetary/designation gains immediately after.
