gmat 680 , need advice regarding colleges .

by pwangdoo » Fri Jul 30, 2010 10:21 am
Hi ,

I gave my GMAT two days back and have got a score of 680 ( Q 43 V 39) .

A bit of background info : I am 31 years old , internal medicine physician from India . I have a work experience of 6 years in the healthcare industry , including community service as well as corporate style of working ( similar to "hospitalist" type practice pattern in the US. )

I am planning to move into healthcare management or pharma industry , and my target programs are the top 20 colleges in the US , with a preference for those with a stronger healthcare elective .

During the preparation , my CAT scores were in the 680 - 710 range for MGMAT , 670 on Kaplan diagnostic and 720,740 ,760 and 770 on the power prep. Should i give the GMAT again and try to get a score in the range of 720-740 or is the above score above considering that medicine is not an over represented background.

I am looking forward to scholarships also , and perhaps a better score should help more .

thanks for your valuable time . looking forward to your advice ...

Hello,

Adcoms will assess your application in various contexts. From an industry context, you're right, medicine is not a common background, so it's a differentiating factor. On the other hand, Indians tend to have high scores, and you'll also be viewed in this context. I'd say for top-20 US schools, your current GMAT score is sufficient to allow your application serious consideration. On the other hand, it's low for some of those schools, and hence a relative weakness. To what extent will vary depending on school, applicant pool, etc. If you think you can definitely score higher on a retake with reasonable effort, then I'd suggest retaking it. If not, then go with this score and make every effort to complete outstanding applications.

Best regards,

P.S. I agree with your comment regarding scholarships -- you'd most likely need a stronger GMAT score to boost your chances in this regard.

Dear Cindy ,

thanks for your prompt reply and honest assessment. I agree with you that my GMAT score may become a relative weakness in the application ( rest of the academic credentials are decent though !). I had almost made up my mind on a GMAT retake before the first round of applications , and your post strengthened my resolve to do well .

One last query before i dive back again into the prep guides ; is there a large difference in the acceptance/rejection ratios between the first and second round of applications for the top 10 colleges ? If it is not the case, I would like to apply by the second round after getting a higher score and working on the essays in a more comprehensive way .

thanks again , and see you on the other side of the retake :-)
