Fuqua JD/MBA

by dualhopeful » Thu Jul 07, 2011 12:56 pm
Hi Stacy,

I would love if you could let me know what you think my chances are for a JD/MBA at Duke. I am already admitted to the law school (starting 8/11) and plan to apply this coming cycle to Fuqua. I would love your advice not only on my chances but also on what Round you think is best. The Round decision concerns me especially because, come August, I will be very busy in law school and don't know how much I time I will have to devote to my Fuqua app. Thus, I think I should probably apply earlier rather than later. Thanks so much in advance!

UG: Ivy League, History major, 3.3 gpa
GMAT: 700 (Q44,V42) (is that quant a dealbreaker?)
Work: 2 years, paralegal. very small firm, promoted informally, no award system
EC: Latino Assoc. of my UG school; UG fraternity with executive positions and awards; few other UG things
Other: Ethnic minority, extensive travel experience (would draw on for an essay), semi-unique interests around building things (woodworking, etc.)

Thanks for all your help!

Dear dualhopeful,

I agree--earlier is best. Not only because of the time you might not have once law school starts, but also because you have decided it is what you want to do so why wait. There is no advantage to applying in a later round. Based on your post, I think you have many interesting and positive aspects to your profile. Your GMAT and GPA are strong, and no, your quant score is not a dealbreaker. Your quant score is solid for a liberal arts major. While your work experience is on the low end in terms of quantity, be sure to highlight any projects you managed or teams you led. Likewise, use your leadership experience from your college extracurriculars to show your leadership potential in your applications. Finally, it will be key for you to convey your rationale for why you want the dual degree--how both the JD and MBA fit into your overall career plans.

Best of luck,
Lisa
