MBA Candidate profile assesment please!

by mkuppalli » Mon Jul 18, 2011 11:49 am
Hello,

I was wondering what you thought of my chances of getting into my target schools: Booth, Kellog, Darden or MIT based on my stats:

I am an American male (of indian decent). 28 years old
GMAT- 680
Verbal- 38 (83%)
Math- 45 (74%)

My GMAT story is awful, The first time i took it, i got sick two days before and was violently ill, so my score was pretty bad. The second time (last week) i was very prepared and averaging 700+ on all my practice exams, but the power in the facility where i took the test went out 3 times during the exam, which really threw my timing and focus off... I am not sure if its worth it to go through the pain to study all over again for another 20 or 30 points...

GPA- 3.5 (Major in Marketing and International Business)
Work Experience- 5 years at a small IT Management Consulting firm where i was the Project Manager/Lead for two $million dollar+ projects, and got to be very involved in the corporate aspect as well, and last year i started my own consulting company, and having been going after small contracts since jul 2010.

my story is to sell my entrepreneurial venture along with my consulting experience... Do you think i am strong candidate for these schools, or do you think my GMAT score might hold me back?

Thanks in advance!

Dear mkuppalli,

While your GMAT score is below average for your target schools, it is not out of range. Your GPA is above average and you have your other application components (essays, recommendations, resume, interview) to further balance and strengthen your application. I think you have a chance with a strong, overall application package. Thus you must determine if you feel all the other application components will be strong and make a compelling case for your admission. Whether or not you should retake the GMAT is up to you on if you feel you can increase your score AND it will not sacrifice your essays.

Good luck,
Lisa
