Idiom SC Q ( required .. )

Because of the enormous research and
development expenditures required to survive in the electronics industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large.
(A) to survive
(B) of firms to survive
(C) for surviving
(D) for survival
(E) for firms' survival


Can we have an answer with reason please..

IMO E
such firms ....in the later half of s/c needs prior mentioning of firms
only B and E does so
And E is more appropriate

I agree to you and I selected "E" as well. Though the correct answer is "B".

If you isolate the phrase "required to survive in the electronics industry", you will see how ambiguous it appears. Required of whom to survive - Businesses, firms, people?

The latter part of the sentence, "such firms tend to be very large", tells us that the author is actually talking about "firms". It is essential to insert "of firms" to clearly convey that "the enormous research and development expenditures" is required of firms to survive in a particular industry. Thus (B) is the correct answer.

(A), (C), (D) do not have the subject "firms". In (E) "firms" in possessive case makes the sentence awkward.

Miss Aprpita I dont understand required of firms
research and developement expenditures required of firms sounds odd to me
research and developement expenditures are requirements of firms sounds ok

required for survival also sounds good

can u plz explain

expenditures required of firms to survive
is one of the most awkward structure i have seen...

if it emerges in the middle of the gmat test ,i guess 8/10 students will eliminate it as awkward structure and i feel that same
expenditure required for firms to survive makes sense but.....

in searching of the idiom about that, i found that 'required of whom to ~', which makes sense the explanation above.

Additionally, I quote the original sentence for you.

"... the level of effort that will be required of firms to adapt ..."
