Since the 1930's aircraft manufacturers have tried to build airplanes with frictionless
wings, shaped so smoothly and perfectly that the air passing over them would not
become turbulent.
(A) wings, shaped so smoothly and perfectly
(B) wings, wings so smooth and so perfectly shaped
(C) wings that are shaped so smooth and perfect
(D) wings, shaped in such a smooth and perfect manner
(E) wings, wings having been shaped smoothly and perfectly so

OA is B

(B) wings, wings so smooth and so perfectly shaped - makes perfect sense and totally parallel. so smooth and so perfectly.
(C) wings that are shaped so smooth and perfect - weird construction. not parallel
(D) wings, shaped in such a smooth and perfect manner - modifier issue
(E) wings, wings having been shaped smoothly and perfectly so - wrong use of having. again a modifier issue.

Please explain why A is wrong
I see some adjective vs adverb issue in this. Please explain

HI,

I don't think so that there is any grammatical error with choice A.
Adverbs "smoothly" and "perfectly" are describing verb "shaped".

The issue is with the intended meaning of the sentence.
Option B conveys the intended meaning of the sentence.

(A) wings, shaped so smoothly and perfectly [here subject is the aircraft manufacturers. Shaped so smoothly and perfectly modifies the manufacturers]
(B) wings, wings so smooth and so perfectly shaped [ Right choice, wings is repeated in the to show its connection with modifier. Smooth acts as an adjective describing the wings and perfectly as an adverb qualifying the verb shape.]
(C) wings that are shaped so smooth and perfect [here that refers to plane not wings]
(D) wings, shaped in such a smooth and perfect manner [same as option a modifier issue]
(E) wings, wings having been shaped smoothly and perfectly so [wordy and awkward construction]

One definition of smoothly is without difficulty.
In A, shaped so smoothly seems to imply that the wings were shaped by the manufacturers without difficulty.
In other words, that the process of shaping the wings was easy.
The intended meaning is that the WINGS themselves were smooth.
