Visiting School with a Parent

by bml1105 » Sat May 03, 2014 9:55 am
I'm looking to start applying to some top 10 schools this Fall. I understand visiting a school can help me determine if a school is the right fit, but also show my interest to that school, help with essays, etc. If I brought my mother to the school visits with me, would that be perceived as a negative? I value my mother's opinion, but as a 27 year old woman, I don't want to give off the perception that I'm dependent on my parents.

I fully understand that I may be over thinking this. But any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think it's so bad, but you might want to leave your mom out of any interactions with adcom members. Other than that you can walk with her around campus, no shame in that...

Hi there,

It's ok to have your mother present but, as yigaloran mentioned, it would be best if she doesn't attend any events with the adcom. So most school visits will include an info session / Q&A, a tour, and then, probably, a class visit and/or a lunch with students. She could potentially join you for the tour and that isn't entirely unheard of but it would probably best for her to not attend any of the events and just explore the campus with you later.

It's not only a perception thing, but it also can throw off the dynamic for other students AND you. One of the great things about school visits is you can meet other applicants and students and see if you'd like it there. If you go with a friend or a parent, you're attached to them and it's going to drastically limit your experience.

Let us know if you have any other school visit questions!
