MBA and the Entertainment Industry

by larisaperel » Fri Sep 10, 2010 10:48 am
Hello

I am starting the application/studying for the GMAT process just now, and am planning to actually apply to schools in 2012 or so. I am looking at USC and UCLA Part-Time programs. However, I feel like I might be in trouble. Some background on me:

I graduated from UC San Diego with a BS in Management Science and Minor in Russian Literature, but had a less than stellar gpa (2.56. I always did well in math, but not in econ or finance) I thought I wanted to go into investment banking. However, due to a bad economy and sheer luck, I ended up working in the entertainment industry and absolutely loved it. I started out as an intern in Paramount and have worked myself up to Casting for Fox Animation. However, I want to produce and feel like a higher degree would be beneficial.

My questions are:
1) To make up for the 2.56 gpa, i went to UCLA Extension and completed 2 certificate programs (52 units) in Business and Management in Entertainment and Producing with a 3.8 GPA. Does that count as an alternate transcript? Or should I take some Finance classes? And how many?
2) Would becoming PMP (project management) certified be beneficial?
3) Do I stand a chance?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Larisa

You really have two dilemmas, 1) whether or not you can get into your target schools, and 2) whether or not the MBA will help you become a producer. Having spent half my career in the film industry working for all the major studios, I can say pretty authoritatively that an MBA and $2.00 might buy you a cup of coffee in Hollywood when it comes to producing. Don't get me wrong, you can likely pick up some helpful skills in b-school that you could use as a producer (but truthfully, what you learn in b-school does not always mesh with how the film industry runs). If you wanted to work your way up in the finance department at Paramount, I would say MBA is a great idea, but if you are looking to go to the creative, above the line side of film production, you will honestly be wasting your time and money. Read the book 'Wannabe' about a guy who went to b-school and then couldn't get arrested in H'wood on the creative side of the biz--MBA is almost a detriment actually, as you would not be perceived as a "creative talent." Much like an AD, or Assistant Director, rarely goes on to direct. They are simply two different worlds, and once you get in one, it's hard to make the crossover. If you decide to go back to b-school anyway, I would say about dilemma #1 that you may have a shot, but it will depend on your GMAT, recommendations and ability to cast a compelling vision for your future. If you write the essays saying you want to be a producer, prepare to get some furrowed brows at USC and UCLA. They would be looking for a more tangible, traditional business-type focus.

I still say you are better off continuing taking selective, targeted courses that will help you be a producer and then spend hyour time working hard and leveraging your network to get to where you want to go. As you know, it's all about who you know and who knows you, so go work for a top producer as an assistant, learn the ropes and then beg for your shot at glory. Hope this helps and does not discourage you.
