Hi everyone

I am a newly minted JD thinking about doing an MBA. I enjoyed the study of the law, but doing internships at law firms and also hearing about peoples' experience in the profession, I do not think i'd enjoy being an attorney. I am also quite disillusioned by the job market for attorneys. It is quite saturated, and the pay is not as good as most people think.

Even though I was a liberal arts major in college, I've always been interested in reading about business, economy, and investing. I read the WSJ, BusinessWeek, and books like "The Intelligent Investor".

I'd like to pursue a career in the business world, especially in terms of finance, but don't know if an MBA is right for me or a Masters in Finance. I am also concerned especially about being able to enter a Finance program due to not having a quantitative background.

I have also even considered getting a Masters in Accounting, just to get my foot in the door of the business world.

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you

Dear risingsun,

In my opinion, you need to look at MBA programs. MS programs in finance and accounting will not be as helpful to you and you may not meet the prerequisites for these programs. The main question you will need to answer is why you now want your MBA after you completed your JD and how does that make sense in your career plans. It is not enough to say that you have always been interested in business and finance--you need to be specific on what you want to do and how the JD will help you in that career path. There are some earlier posts in this section from other attorneys that you might want to read for additional information.

Best of luck,
Lisa
