Good Finance Programs

by hotelengineer » Thu Feb 19, 2009 3:16 pm
Hi,

I would like to do my MBA in Finance concentrating on entrepreneurial and Family Business oriented companies.

I have not answered my GMAT yet. I am planning on answering it in mid May 2009. I am aiming for a score close to 750

I have done my Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from National Institute of Technology Karnataka, India ( One of the top Engineering institutes in India) and passed with a distinction with an average of 73% ( Graduated June 2006)

I worked in a Heavy engineering firm for 4 months as a Shop Supervisor before deciding to change careers.

I worked with a Real Estate firm for 2 months as a Marketing Executive handling International Sales & Marketing of properties in India.

Immediately after that I went to Switzerland to do a Post Graduate Diploma in International Hospitality from Les Roches International School of Hotel Management where i passed with a distinction among the top 5 in the class with an average of 86% ( Graduated Dec 2007)

I worked for a year in a Luxury Ski Resort in USA as a management trainee in the Front Office.

After that I came back to India and joined the family business and currently am setting up a hotel as part of our business expansion plan.

I would like to know two things:-

1) Which are the Business Schools offering the best Finance programs including electives like Entrepreneurship, Family Oriented business' Financial Management?

2)What are my chances of getting into these Business schools considering my profile?

I have already looked at Harvard and am quite impressed with its list of electives. Considering my profile what are my chances of getting into Harvard Business School?

What can i do to improve my profile. I still have about 6 months to apply.

Eagerly waiting for your advice.

C

Dear C,

All schools will have a good variety of finance courses, so you should focus your research on schools that offer the entrepreneurship courses you seek. You might check the Entrepreneur magazine rankings as a place to start for identifying potential schools. Then you can research each school to determine which ones are the overall best match for you.

As for your chances at HBS, that will greatly depend on your GMAT score and how well you articulate why you want a MBA in relation to your future career goals. To be competitive as an applicant from India, you definitely need to score in the 700s (higher is better). It will also be imperative to submit well-written essays and strong recommendations to be in the best position.

Best of luck,
Lisa
