Dartmouth Tuck or Yale SOM

by money9111 » Mon Jan 25, 2010 6:28 pm
Anyone looking into either of these two schools? I know many people are trying to get into The Three (HBS, Wharton, Stanford). I'd be interested in hearing others perspectives on Tuck & Yale... especially if you've visited.

Cheers!

with my profile, i can only dream of tuck and yale.
Tuck - small school, it only offers the FT MBA and so you'll get complete and dedicated attention from the faculty and admin

Yale - huge school - the focus a lot on giving back to the community

Again, it all depends on why you want to do the MBA, your plans post-MBA, etc

Personally, I would like to return to India after my MBA. In India, here are the responses you'd expect to hear from the companies interviewing you:

Yale: "Wow. Yale huh? Good good"

Tuck: "Heh? Sorry, come again. I didn't get you. I heard 'Tuck'." :?

Dartmouth Tuck vs. Yale SOM are about the same sizes.. Tuck has about 240/class and SOM has about 220/class

If you then wanted to make that comparison it would be equivalent to saying "Oh I got my MBA at Dartmouth" vs. "Oh i got my MBA at Yale"... which in all honesty I think Yale still wins out... I think there are instances where people use the school name and other instances where they dont...

I got my MBA at Chicago vs. I got my MBA at Booth vs. I got my MBA at Chicago Booth

I got my MBA at NYU vs. I got my MBA at Stern (I'm in NY, so it's just common for people to say Stern)

If you go to Havard...well lucky you... you could prolly say HBS or Harvard

I think Tuck is great because its a small program, with a top ten reputation. Out of the schools in the top ten their alums really have a love for tuck and go out of their way to help other students. I think that would be the biggest asset to attending Tuck.

i meant that in tuck you will be part of a relatively small group. Whereas at Yale, you won't be able to hide within the MBA class or MBA classmates. The school has a very active & very large student body and there are no boundaries within Yale.

Oh I didn't realize that about Yale.... I guess I figured that all MBA programs were siloed. That could be a good thing or a bad thing... I have gotten the sense about the students & alumni @ Tuck. They are incredibly helpful and the school pride is second to none.

So from what I gather... @ Yale SOM you're a Yale Student first then a Yale SOM student, whereas @ Dartmouth you're a Tuck Student first that happens to be @ Dartmouth...

If you're interested in Tuck, you should also research Darden and Johnson. The cultures at those three are very similar.

i really need to get down there to experience the culture though... FIT is a BIG deal for me...

i think everyone likes the case method. But you have got to make sure it's right for you. As for me, since i have minimal work experience, I think i would be better off in a school which offers a combo of case based + lecture based classes. Many schools offer this. At the end of the day, it's upto you to sit down & decide what u'd be most comfortable with.

that's a great step. Be sure to get in touch with the adcoms prior to your visit so that you have enough opportunity to engage with them once ur down there

good to hear. It should be, but unfortunately isn't, the case for everyone.

I don't know, it may be better than you think. I'm from the midwest and went to undergrad in the South and it wasn't a bad experience for the most part. With a top 20 MBA program, you will have classmates from all over the glove anyway. Odds are your circle will consist of people from Darden as well as other professional school students (probably law). Their grad programs attract people from all regions, so the only thing overly Southern would be the weather. Trust me, that will be a welcome change during this time of year...lol

ah yes.. warm weather can never hurt! I'd welcome it with shorts, t-shirt, and flip flops... well not really seeing as though I'd be in an MBA program... maybe some loafers and a khaki shorts w/ a polo ;-) I'll begin my research on Darden later this week. I wonder if they'll be at the MBA Tour this weekend... note to self - check into that.

For anyone who is interested in Tuck and would like to get some more information and speak to alumni... here is a link to Tuck Connections, where you input your interests and it matches you with an Alum who will contact you... I used this and it was priceless... I still talk to him actually...
