Hi candygal79,

Have you taken any full-length practice CATs yet? If so, then what were your scores? If you want to apply to Business School this fall, then you don't necessarily have to take the GMAT in March (in less than 5 weeks). Most Test Takers spend more than 3 months of time preparing. If your skills are rusty, then it's likely that you'll need more time than that to properly prepare.

Hi Rich,

The reason am taking GMAT by March 12 is cos I want to apply to UC Irvine for Fall intake and their deadline is on Apr 1.To be honest, I have only four Uni to apply and two of them are UCs which requires my GMAT score by Apr 1.I am applying to Cali schools since I have friends in Cali and I did my first degree in CSUEB. No I have not done the full length test yet.

If you're talking about the diagnostic test in the Official Guide, don't worry too much. That test is a killer.
The test is meant to familiarize you with the types of questions found on the GMAT and give you a very approximate idea of your current skills.

If you're like most people, you took the test very early in your studies. So, don't dwell too much on the results.

As Rich mentioned, an official practice test (GMATPrep test) will give you a better idea of how much work you have ahead of you.

Cheers,
Brent

Hi candygal79,

Most Business Schools actually have a bit of "flexibility" when it comes to the application deadlines and when you have to take the GMAT. If you contact the Schools directly and let them know that you'll have the physical application in on time, they might allow you to take the GMAT at the last possible moment (and in some cases, AFTER the application deadline). That extra time would provide a valuable opportunity to continue studying and increase your chances of raising your GMAT score.

Hi Mr Rich,

After debating too long, I have postponed my exams to April 14.Just completed the Maths Foundation.

I think How do I prepare well for Verbal section? Again I did the Diagnostic test and I scored really bad.I have problem in SC and CR.I am very worried. I am about to do the practise questions from Verbal Review OG.

Hi candygal79,

Advice on how to handle the Verbal section may vary a bit depending on who you talk to, but the basic advice tends to be the same:

-For SCs, you need to know your grammar and idiom rules. This is a "technical" category, which means that you need to know the rules and then you need to be able to spot when they apply. The GMAT does routinely test certain grammar rules in certain "ways"/patterns, so repetition and a strong memory can help here.

-For CRs and RCs, you need to take the proper notes and understand what the individual questions are "really" asking you for. Some people can think their way through these questions without taking notes, but I'm NOT a fan of that approach. During the Verbal section of the GMAT, most Test Takers become very tired and end up making silly mistakes because they're not paying enough attention (nor taking enough notes). Too many silly mistakes will kill your score in any section of the GMAT.

Since it sounds like you're self-studying with books, you'll have to work through whatever lessons/tactics/advice your books offer. After practicing for a few weeks, if you don't see improvement, then you'll have to probably find some new resources that are more in line with your personality.

Your new Test Date will give you some extra time to study, which is good, but you're going to need to do a lot of work in a relatively short amount of time (just over 7 weeks). It's also important to take a full length practice CAT so we have a sense of your current skill level. You won't be happy with that first practice score, but working through those CATs and making mistakes (which you will then fix) are necessary steps to help you to improve.

Hi Mr Rich,

Thanks for ur prompt reply.

I have decided to purchase Kaplan Foundation book along with Manhattan Verbal books to help me.

I have another question-As u mentioned me to take CAT exam , can I take the test after I brush up on my Verbal ? At least I would be confident then.

Hi candygal79,

Brushing up on the Verbal section before taking a practice CAT is fine, BUT you should not wait too long before taking that practice CAT. While practice problems can help you to practice individual skills and become familiar with concepts, practice CATs test you on EVERYTHING in a test-like fashion. That includes pacing, endurance, and a variety of physical and psychological tests that don't occur when doing homework. Many Test Takers need to take at least 5-6 practice CATs to build up all of those additional skills. It's better to take the CATs "spread out", so that you can identify any difficulties you might have with the overall exam earlier rather than later. So that next practice CAT needs to happen soon.
