(C)the team went back conveniently to its old ways and began arguing over irrelevant matters that were hindering the development of the project in the first place.
(D)irrelevant matters were discussed by the team which went back to its old ways that were hindering the development of the project.
(E)the team conveniently went back to its old ways and began arguing over irrelevant matters that were hindering the development of the project in the first place.

since the team represent a group, hence it must be singular so we rule out option (A), (B) (their instead of its)
option (D) is ruled out since it is describing as irrelevant matters went back to its old ways (which is used),
The left options are (C) & (E)
Now since conveniently is describing an action of team so it should be placed as close to it as possible...Hence (E) is the correct option..
I hope I'm correct.

The ans. is E.
Absolutely E

1)team - its ----rule out A and B

2)"conveniently team" --- is this a name of a team ? No

"team went back conveniently" -- is conveniently a name of a place. for ex : team went back home . Does "conveniently" means some place? No. Its an adjective to show how team went back.

"conveniently went back" ---correct use of "conveniently"

Rule out C and D

3) what is left "E" ...check the tense there " the team conveniently went back .....and began arguing
Yes its the past tense that we need --- perfect.

Hence "E" is OA without any doubt. Thanks for posting this question.

(A)the team conveniently went back to their old ways and began arguing over irrelevant matters that were hindering the development of the project in the first place. - 'team' is singular so we need 'its'

(B)in the first place, the team conveniently went back to their old ways and begun to argue over matters of minor relevance which were hindering the project's development. - 'begun' is wrong tense, we need 'began' here.

(C)the team went back conveniently to its old ways and began arguing over irrelevant matters that were hindering the development of the project in the first place. - Awkward

(D)irrelevant matters were discussed by the team which went back to its old ways that were hindering the development of the project. - meaning of the sentence is changed.

(E)the team conveniently went back to its old ways and began arguing over irrelevant matters that were hindering the development of the project in the first place. - Correct
