Rectangle ABCD has an area of 84 square feet. Point E lies on side AB, such that the ratio of line segment AE to line segment EB is 4 to 3, and point F lies on side DC. What is the area, in square feet, of triange AFE?

a) 24
b) 42
c) 48
d) 70
e) It cannot be determined

Could you explain?

The area

say x is the length of AB and y is the length of BD

xy = 84

Now area of triangle AFE = 1/2 *base*height

= 1/2* AE* BC
= 1/2*4/7x*y
= 2/7xy
= 2/7*84
=24
