Any combination of overwork and stress inevitably leads to insomnia. Managers at HiCorp, Inc., all suffer from stress. A majority of the managers—despite their doctors' warnings—work well over 60 hours per week, whereas the other managers work no more than the normal 40 hours per week. HiCorp gives regular bonuses only to employees who work more than 40 hours per week.

Which of the following conclusions is most strongly supported by the statements above?

(A) Managers at HiCorp work under conditions that are more stressful than the conditions under which managers at most other companies work.

(B) Most of the employee bonuses given by HiCorp are given to managers.

(C) At HiCorp, insomnia is more widespread among managers than among any other group of employees.

(D) No manager at HiCorp who works only 40 hours per week suffers from overwork.

(E) Most of the managers at HiCorp who receive regular bonuses have insomnia.

Please Explain.

I'd try POE on this one.

(A) Managers at HiCorp work under conditions that are more stressful than the conditions under which managers at most other companies work.

This is irrelevant, the question provides no comparison between HiCorp managers and other companies' managers.

(B) Most of the employee bonuses given by HiCorp are given to managers.

The statement indicates that employees who receive regular bonuses work more than 40 hours per week, it does not specify what proportion of the employees receiving bonuses are managers.

(C) At HiCorp, insomnia is more widespread among managers than among any other group of employees.

Again, the statement says nothing to this effect.

(D) No manager at HiCorp who works only 40 hours per week suffers from overwork.

This one's tricky. I would eliminate it based on the extreme wording that "no manager" suffers from overwork at 40 hours per week. Because the statement does not explicitly define overwork, I'd eliminate this.

(E) Most of the managers at HiCorp who receive regular bonuses have insomnia.

Yes. We know from the statement that overwork + stress leads to insomnia. All the managers at HiCorp are stressed, so the managers that are also overworked will have insomnia. Only employees who work more than the regular 40 hr/week (ie, overwork) receive regular bonuses. The managers who receive regular bonuses are overworked + stressed, so they must suffer from insomnia.

would opt for E

A. out of scope. no info about managers of other companies

B. out of scope. no information on whether only managers get bonus

C. out of scope. no comparison made between insomnia levels of different classes of employees

D. close. 40 hrs/week is given to be the normal hours. but we do not know how exactly overwork is defined

E. correct, IMO. all employees have stress. stress+>60 hrs/week ( a majority work for >60 hrs/week, others only < 40hrs and do not qualify for bonus. >60 hrs/week can be said to be overwork since the doctors advise against it ) leads to insomnia. so most of the employees getting regular bonus gets insomnia.

(D) No manager at HiCorp who works only 40 hours per week suffers from overwork.

(E) Most of the managers at HiCorp who receive regular bonuses have insomnia.
My answer: E

A: no info on other companies
B,C: no info on other employee groups
D: no info on 40hr-week workers.
E: 1.overwork -> insomnia, 2. overwork -> bonus. therefore bonus <-> insomnia.

Ans (E)..Let's do some Math here

Over Work+Stress ----> Insomania...(i)
Most Managers-HiCorp---->Stress...(ii)
Most Managers ----> >60 hrs/week...(iii)
HiCorp-Regular Bonuses----> >60 hrs/week...(iv)

(iv)+(iii)---> Most Managers get Regular Bonuses...(v)

(v)+(iii)+(ii)---->(i)

So (E) is the Answer
