Whats wrong with B? I thought C was wrong because we do not know what which is modifying, electronic mail systems or a large number of electronic mail systems. What is the rule with which?

IMO - C

The existence....., which...proves
I am not sure why exactly B is wrong but one reason can be

That there exists a large number of electronic mail systems that have hundreds of thousands of subscribers is a proof - without 'a' sounds the sentence sounds awkward.

That is just my opinion there may be much better reasons to eliminate 'B'. On the whole option B sounds awkward.

In my opinion one reason why B could be wrong because
there seems to be ambiguity as to what is the proof "existence of electronic mail systems " or "having hundreds of thousands of subscribers "

while in C, there is a non essential clause starting with ",which" and it clarifies that the clause "The existence of a large number of electronic mail systems" is the proof.

I hope i am clear

I agree with "mehravikas" explanation. Also, we need to have "a" before proof.
