what is the right age? am i over the hill?

I just completed my gmat and I scored a 740 :)
I have around 7-8 years of work experience since I have been working full-time since I graduated with my bachelors.
however, I am concerned about my age. I am 29 now and I will be applying this fall 2012 to start school in 2013 since i missed round 2 deadlines as well and I have not started on my application prep work at all. I will be 30 (2 months shy of 31) when I start school in 2013 if I apply in 2012 October.
Am I over the hill? Is my age a disadvantage. I would like to break into management consulting post-MBA.

Hi there,

Thanks for your post. Your work experience does put you above average for most top US programs with a range of anywhere to 2-5 years being the average. However, if you are able to clearly state your goals, reason for career change as well as the reason that now is the right time (since the adcom will likely wonder why you didn't apply 3-4 years ago), you could still be competitive. Remember, it's the complete package that matters, so a great GMAT score, clear goals and great essays can go a long way. Perhaps pick some schools that value older applicants (Ross and Tuck for example).

Hi there,
Stacy's advice is accurate. I'm a 2nd year student at Tuck and you would by no means be considered 'too old' to pursue an MBA so long as you can explain why mba / why now / why this school...etc. In my class (2012), the oldest student is 34.

Hi Stacey,

I am a newbie... I am really interested in taking up GMAT. But I am also 29 now. I have not started my prep for GMAT. I have a software work experience for 7 years working across different companies in India, US and Denmark. Could you please let me know if my age and my strict work schedule would be a barrier for me for GMAT and MBA admissions.

Please help me and advice me.

Hi Nithiya,

By no means are you too old for an MBA as long as you have solid reasons (goals)and can clearly articulate your need for the degree. Take your time as you prepare for the GMAT. Your score will largely determine where you should apply, so the higher the better!
