I took the GMAT a few days back and scored a disappointing 630 (44Q 32V). While am sad because of my quant score, as I was consistently scoring 49-50 in all my practice exams, am not shocked with my verbal score, which has always been around the 30 mark in all my practice exams.
If there is one area in verbal that I can say is my Achilles' Heel, it will be TIME. Yes, I know am preaching to the choir when it come to the touchy topic of time on the verbal section. My mistake: never kept a log or report card to access my verbal errors.
Having read manhattan SC guide a zillion times, I can recite the laws in my sleep -- no jokes, my wife once told me I recited some wierd XY idiom in my sleep. But when it comes to doing the test, I cannot apply these laws. I get flustered as time is my enemy and I loose it. Result: I spend more than two minutes on a sentence correction question.
Critical reasoning, again, is ruined because of time. I understand the logic, but it takes me more than 2 mins to get to the right answer.
Reading comprehension, which I thought would be a nightmare for me in terms of time, is actually my friend when it comes to saving time. Still far from being an expert in this area, I have, however, learnt to read very fast. At times, am totally oblivious to what the author is saying, but some how at the end my brain captures what the author is trying to say -- yep my brain does function occasionally.
Bottom line: I ALWAYS end up doing the last 13 questions in less than 15 mins. This includes the RC passage one gets in the 30 - 41 questions range. Result: diasater.
My verbal performance has to change, need to get it in the 40's, and I need some direction from anyone smarter than me -- that means anyone on this forum.
My dilema: I have my CFA level III exam coming up on June 6 and the exam is a beast to say the least. I probably will not touch the GMAT books until after June 6 as I need to study for the CFA. I want to apply for fall 2010 so I will have to give the GMAT, again, latest by August end as I will be applying in round one. That gives me around 2.5 months of prep time from June 7.
I definitely cannot and will not apply with a 630 score.
Verbal is difficult and so is Maths, but I know I can do it. All is need is some direction, some guidance from the disciplined folks like everyone on this forum.
