Each of the booker prize awarded down the years were recipients that produced meaningful literature reflecting not superior genius or artistry but the traumas or traditions of a 'time'.

a. Each of the booker prize awarded down the years were recipients that produced meaningful literature reflecting not superior genius or artistry but the traumas or traditions of a 'time'.

b. Everyone of the recipients of the booker prizes, awarded down the years, produced meaningful literature reflecting not just superior genius but also the traumas of a 'time'.

c. Each of the booker prizes awarded down the years was that of recipients that produced meaningful literature reflecting not superior genius or artistry but the traumas or traditions of a 'time'

d. Each of the booker prizes awarded down the years was one of a recipient who produced meaningful literature reflecting not superior genius or artistry but also the traumas or traditions of a 'time'.

e. All the booker prizes awarded down the years were produced by recipients whose work reflected not just superior genius or artistry but the traumas or traditions of a 'time' as well.

I would go with D option.............wats the OA?

A,C wrong because of the use of "that" with "recipients"
B wrong because i feel it to be awkward
E wrong because changes the intended meaning of the sentence i.e recipients produced booker prizes.

would love to choose C . i suppose that " that" or " one" in C and D means the prices thus one of a recipient doesnt make sense

i am between B and D, but finally B don`t know exactly why
a)Each of the booker prize awarded down the years were recipients- clearly wrong each requires was
c) that of recipients that produced
i don`t love that twice, and also recipience are alive, humans ( as i think) so we can`t use that here
e)All the booker prizes awarded down the years were produced by recipients
not sure that it is intended meaning
recipients do not produce booker prizes, they produce literature, and are rewarded with booker prizes
d)not sure how to get rid off it.
Each of the booker prizes awarded down the years was one of a recipient
not sure that one has proper antecedent,
besides whole construction of the sentence seems strange, B says the same but with better style

Option A ->
(i) Subject - Verb disagreement (Each .... were)
(ii) Logical predication (prize = recipient?)

Option C ->
(i) Each is singular ..booker prizes is plural
(ii) 'that' - what does it refer to?

Option D ->
(i) Each is singular ..booker prizes is plural
(ii) Logical predication (prize = recipient ?)

Option E->
(i) Booker prizes were produced by recipients - Not OK

Note: Every is singulat in usage but indicates a plural meaning; Each is singular in usage and in meaning

Hi Samarpan,

I rejected B because it was using "not x but also y" and is the idiom not "not only x but also y".............please correct me if i am wrong :-(

I guess it is acceptable. I read it in one of stacey's posts in this forum. If I get hold of it, I will share the link with you.

The reverse is not possible, as in, if you use 'not only', you will have to use 'but also'.

B. hmm, awarded down the years = looks awkward, but still a contender
C. that of recipients that = first that looks awkward, does not have a clear antecedent, second 'that' refers to recipients, this is wrong, that/which can only refer to non-human beings (I read this in some thread of btg, commented by Ron)
D. looks okay, but one of a recipient = Doesn't it should be one of <PLURAL> ?
E. booker prizes ... were produced by recipients = not good

I choose B over D

I have a quick question on the logic you have used to eliminate option D

Option D:
d. Each of the booker prizes awarded down the years was one of a recipient who produced meaningful literature reflecting not superior genius or artistry but also the traumas or traditions of a 'time'.

======> Each of the booker prizes was one of a recipient!! Is it not a case of logical predication?

Yes you are right, I missed that point, looks like booker prize is a recipient ! to is missing. Awarded to = makes sense.
