princestone-CR-urban area

Compared to people who live in other environments, people who live in urban areas have high rates of infection. Such people also have among the lowest levels of physical fitness. Clearly, infection can result from low levels of physical fitness.

Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the argument above?

Rates of infection vary widely among different urban areas.
People who live in urban areas are exposed to extreme concentrations of pollutants, which are known to cause infection.

Many people who live in urban areas have high levels of physical fitness.

Some of the cases of infection in people who are very physically fit are not documented.

Infections are the most infrequently occurring form of illness in either rural or urban areas.

why A is incorrect?

The conclusion is that low levels of physical fitness cause infection.

In order to weaken this argument we need to find an alternate cause for the infection.

A) Even if we accept that the rates of infection vary widely among different urban areas, it is still possible that the cause of infection in urban area is low levels of physical fitness.

B says that it is actually the extreme concentrations of pollutants that cause the high rates of infection in people living in urban areas. B clearly shows that the conclusion of the passage is not correct.

Pick B.

Hope that helps...

A is incorrect because the only thing we care is to weaken the conlusion "Clearly, infection can result from low levels of physical fitness" by finding another reason caused infection or a reason which directly opposite that inclusion.
We dont care how different the rates of infection in urban areas are thus A is out of scope.
