by hemant_rajput » Thu Jan 03, 2013 9:28 am
Can anyone please explain what actually does the last phrase of this sentence mean?

Also please explain the solution

Q. Under high pressure and intense heat, graphite, the
most stable form of pure carbon, changes into the
substance commonly referred to as diamond and
remaining this way whether or not the heat and
pressure are removed.
(A) remaining this way whether or not
(8) remaining like that even as
(C) remaining as such whether or not
(D) remains in this way although
(E) remains thus even when
OA : E
The last sentence means that even if we remove the heat and pressure, the carbon remains in its new form once it has been changed into diamond.

Ok, now the options..

It is clear that " remaining this way " doesn't go with a singular subject.. graphite.

So.. we use the word remains. Now, we are left with option D or option E.

The main difference in these two options are the words - " although " & " when "

We use X although Y , if we are sure that Y is given. And we use " when " if we want to imply the if/then statement. See the below examples..

"You can take the bus to the city, although you cannot drive", then it's a fact that you cannot drive.

"You can take the bus to the city when you cannot drive", then this is basically implies "if/then" statement: if you can't drive, then you can take the bus.

So.. based upon this we choose option E as it correctly uses the word " when ".
