I am an engineer. I want to go for a MBA to break into management consulting or banking. I realize that consulting is easier to break into than banking.
I am turning 29 soon and I will be 29 if I apply this year for a full-time MBA starting in August/September 2012.
I will be 30 if I go for a full-time MBA in 2013.

Does age matter? The reason I ask this is because if I wait for another year or two, I will be a permanent resident of the US. This allows me to be able to go to school full-time without a visa and it gives me flexibility in looking for jobs post-MBA.

If I want to get a MBA before I become a permanent resident, I need to either go for a part-time MBA or abandon my green card process and go full-time on a student visa. After graduating on a student visa, I will need to find a job soon with an employer who is willing to sponsor my work visa.

I am fine with waiting for a year or two if 30/31 is not too old for a FT MBA.

Hello,

You summarized the options and issues well. Being 30-31 will put you within the comfortable age range for regular MBA program that welcome more seasoned applicants, e.g., Michigan, Kellogg, Yale, Tuck, Darden, among others. It would be on the older side for other programs, but not to the point of putting you in the "older applicant" category - rather you'd be on the older side of the "regular" age group. Though, if you wait, you'll definitely want to get in next year!
