Harriet Tubman

by SmarpanGamt » Sat Oct 30, 2010 11:09 am
Before the Civil War, Harriet Tubman, along with other former slaves and white abolitionists, helped create what had become known as the Underground Railroad, and were responsible for leading hundreds, if not thousands, of slaves to freedom.

Please explain how come the meaning from original sentence, certainty, can be changed to uncertainty. (Before war ...) clearly suggest that "had" ( past perfect should come )

OA is E

I chose C :( but after seeing OA analysed it.

See as soon as we see a Past event with an indicator such as Before, After ... immediately HAD becomes correct :P (At least it happens to me)
?
Here, think if the construction had already been Underground rail road then what did Harriet Tubman helped to create ?
This does not make sense.

Where as in E it states a Future event to the past when she helped. Thus Justified.

would most simplistically, is used as a past tense of will.

For example, lets say you comment today:

I will work hard for GMAT.

Tomorrow, if I quote what you said today, I will say:

SmarpanGamt said that (s)he would work hard for GMAT.

would here is used exactly in this context. Essentially talking about future from past perspective. Stay clear of this certainty/uncertainty issue that people often associate would with.

I chose E because it would become known after the construction was over (probably much later). In any case, it was not known at that time.

I know the first action and second action logic also is correct but this is what struck me while reading.
