Is the approach correct

A jewelry dealer initially offered a bracelet for sale at an asking price that would give a profit to the dealer of 40 percent of the original cost. What was the original cost of the bracelet?
(1) After reducing this asking price by 10 percent, the jewelry dealer sold the bracelet at a profit of $403.
(2) The jewelry dealer sold the bracelet for $1,953.

Q1. I took 100 as CP, 140 as SP, Price after discounting as 126 and solved by equating that
26is equivalent to 403, hence 100 is equivalent to.....

I want to know if this approach is correct. If not, what is the right way?

Q2. On the same lines, I approached the second stem
140 is equivalent to 1953, hence 100 is equivalent to....

Hence according to me ans should be D

OA will follow soon

For the first statement your approach is same as mine i.e 26 is equivalent to 403 or 26x=403 or x=403/26 and hence we can get 100x...sufficient

For the second statement, we know only the sold price but no relation between cost price and sold price can be deducted from it i.e we do not know how much profit/loss the seller made by selling it..hence this statement is not sufficient.
IMO ans is A

Ok core of story seems to be
here
asking price=sales price
and there are ask price ,sales price and original price
question establish relationship between ask and o price but there is not relationship between
sales price and original price....
so
B is not sufficient...all because of wording....
