In the A we are using attempt at

but I have always seen that idiom should be attempt to.

Also looking for explanation, I found this link on net:

Attempt at can be the right usage too depending on the situation

A wins over the rest since its the most concise and clear

1)Naturalized in America and originating in Belgium, the chicory (modifier placement is correct)
2) an attempt at developing a substitute or additive for coffee, crossing Cichorium intybus with Cichoiium endivia (an attempt and what follows describes the event or modifies it)

The modifier is correctly placed in A
Naturalized in America and originating in Belgium, the chicory
