Structure is not parallel in D.
Also usage of "has been" (present perfect tense- indicating the event may continue) is correct.

In {D}, "it was great" is incorrect.. the sentence passage indicates a difference over a period of time.. so we cannot use simple past tense but we need prefect tense.

Hi shibsriz,

Parallelism shows up on the GMAT in a number of forms (usually in 2 and 3 item lists or comparisons). Here, the SC compares the size difference between males and females; this comparison will require parallel format. Looking at the 2 choices you mentioned, here's what I see:

A: "the size increase in males has been slight" and "the size increase in females has been great"; ALL elements are parallel.

D: "of the size increase being slight for males" and "for females it was great"; NOTHING is parallel.

Answer A is the correct option.

D: The typical size difference between males and females has lessened because of the size increase.
Not the intended meaning: the difference has not lessened because of the SIZE INCREASE itself.
Eliminate D.

Rather, the difference has lessened because of an ACTION -- what the size increase HAS DONE -- as conveyed by the OA:
The typical size difference between males and females has lessened because the size increase in males HAS BEEN slight.
